Web accessibility got worse in 2026, not better

After six straight years of slow improvement, WebAIM's 2026 audit found accessibility failures increased for the first time — 95.9% of homepages now have a detectable WCAG failure, up from 94.8% in 2025, with average errors per page rising 10.1%. WebAIM's own researchers point to a specific cause: growing page complexity and increased reliance on AI-assisted ("vibe coded") front-end code that inherits accessibility problems from its training data.

The trap: assuming AI-assisted design and development tools produce accessible output by default. They don't, and the data shows the gap widening, not closing.

Six fixable issues cause 96% of all errors

Low-contrast text (83.9% of homepages), missing alt text (53.1%), unlabeled form inputs (51%), empty links (46.3%), empty buttons (30.6%) and missing document language (13.5%) have been the six most common accessibility failures for seven consecutive years. Fixing these six categories alone would meaningfully move the needle for most sites.

More interactive doesn't mean more usable

WebAIM found homepages using ARIA attributes averaged 59.1 errors versus 42 for pages without — and nearly every popular JavaScript library in their dataset, from carousel plugins to UI widget libraries, correlated with more errors, not fewer. Flashy interactivity — the transitions, carousels and animated widgets many sites lean on — often adds complexity faster than it adds real usability.

The trap: treating more animation, more ARIA markup, or more JavaScript components as inherently more "modern" or more usable. The data says the opposite is just as likely.

A popup or broken carousel can undo good visual design

Baymard's 2025 review of 180 top-grossing ecommerce homepages found 55% used aggressive pop-ups, ads or overlay sign-up dialogs that provoked negative user reactions, and 46% of homepage carousels were implemented incorrectly — slides changing milliseconds before a click, sending users to the wrong page. Beautiful visual design doesn't compensate for interaction patterns that actively frustrate people.

How we measure — and what we won't claim

UX and UI design attract some of the most-repeated, least-verifiable statistics in marketing. Here's where we stand.

  • The numbers on this page come from WebAIM's own annual audit of one million homepages and Baymard Institute's own primary UX research — not from vendor marketing claims.
  • We deliberately left out the most commonly repeated UX ROI statistics — "every $1 invested in UX returns $100" and "design-led companies outperform the S&P 500 by 228%" appear on nearly every UX agency site, but we traced both back to a 2009 report and a 2014 blog post that are no longer independently verifiable in citable form. We'd rather say that plainly than keep repeating a number we can't stand behind.
  • An automated accessibility scan finding "zero errors" doesn't mean full WCAG conformance. WebAIM's own methodology notes that automated tools like WAVE can only detect a subset of accessibility issues — manual review by someone who understands WCAG remains necessary, and we build that into every accessibility engagement rather than rely on a scanner alone.
  • We don't guarantee a specific conversion lift or accessibility score before an audit. Your starting point, traffic and platform all affect what's realistic.
  • We'll tell you when the real problem isn't design. If your site's issue is really about content, traffic, or checkout mechanics rather than UI/UX, we'll point you to e-commerce UX optimization, conversion rate optimization or copywriting instead of selling a redesign that won't fix it.

What's the difference between UX design and UI design?

UX (user experience) is about whether someone can actually accomplish what they came to do on your site — navigation, flow, clarity, usability. UI (user interface) is the visual and interactive layer they touch to do it — layout, color, typography, buttons and components. Good design needs both working together; a beautiful interface on a confusing flow, or a well-structured flow with a dated interface, both underperform.

How long does a redesign take?

Do you guarantee a better conversion rate?

No, and we'd be cautious of anyone who does before seeing your site and traffic. What we commit to: design decisions grounded in published usability and accessibility research rather than opinion, and honest reporting on what changed and why.

My site works fine but looks outdated — is that a UX or UI problem?

Usually a UI problem specifically — the flow and functionality are fine, but the visual layer (typography, color, component styles) hasn't kept pace. Our UI Design System tier is built for exactly this: refreshing the visual language without redoing information architecture that already works.

Do you also handle the development, or just the design?
