Generative Engine Optimization Services
Get cited inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Gemini answers — not just ranked on a results page fewer people click through to. We build the structural authority signals generative engines actually retrieve from.
Where your business sits today
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring content so AI systems retrieve, trust and cite it when generating an answer — a discipline formally named in the 2024 Princeton/Georgia Tech paper "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization." It sits under the same umbrella as our broader AI SEO (SEO + AEO + GEO) services, but this page is specifically about the generative-engine layer: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews.
A page-one Google ranking doesn't automatically earn an AI citation — the two systems retrieve differently. We diagnose why your ranked content isn't showing up when someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity the same question.
Schema markup, structured data, direct-answer content patterns and AI-crawler access set up correctly from the start, so new content doesn't need a retrofit six months in.
Generative engines over-represent Wikipedia, government sites and long-established authorities in their citations. This tier builds the third-party proof and original-data footprint that earns a mention beyond your own site.
If your search visibility is the bigger problem, or you want the full picture of SEO, Answer Engine Optimization and GEO together, our AI SEO services page is the right starting point instead.
How each engine actually finds and cites sources
GEO isn't one technique applied everywhere — each engine retrieves differently, so a program built for only one platform under-serves the rest.
| How it retrieves | Citation visibility to the user | What GEO can influence | |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT (search) | Live web search plus browsing, layered on top of the base model | Inline citations shown | Structured, quotable answers; clear author and source attribution |
| Perplexity | Its own web index and crawler, built citation-first by design | Citations are the product | Comprehensiveness and factual specificity; original data and quotes |
| Google AI Overviews | Google's existing search index and ranking signals, summarized by Gemini | Citations shown, rarely clicked | Structured data, direct-answer formatting; existing SEO authority still matters |
| Microsoft Copilot | Bing's search index, summarized by an OpenAI/Microsoft model | Inline citations shown | Bing-indexed authority and structured content, similar to classic SEO fundamentals |
| Google Gemini / AI Mode | Google's index plus deeper multi-step retrieval for complex queries | Citations shown, less consistently | Depth and factual density across a topic, not just a single page |
Mechanisms are drawn from each provider's own documentation and independent technical write-ups, not internal benchmarks. We didn't find a credible, independently reproducible source for platform-specific citation-rate percentages, so we've left those out rather than publish a number we can't stand behind. Where GEO gets misunderstood
Four patterns we see when a business's first attempt at GEO doesn't move the needle.
Ranking #1 on Google doesn't guarantee an AI citation
Google AI Overviews draw on Google's own index, but that doesn't mean the top-ranked organic page automatically becomes the cited source. Pew Research's independent study of real browsing behavior found Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit are the most frequently cited sources in AI summaries, and government sites are cited three times more often in AI summaries than in standard results. Generative engines retrieve and weight sources differently from how they rank a standard results page.
The trap: treating a page's Google ranking as a proxy for its AI-citation odds. The two are correlated, not identical — a page can rank well and still never surface in an AI-generated answer.
Keyword optimization is not the same discipline as citation optimization
The founding GEO study tested specific content interventions — adding statistics, citing sources, adding direct quotations — against a controlled benchmark of 10,000 queries, and found some of these techniques measurably improved a page's visibility inside generated answers. None of this involves keyword density or meta tags; it's about giving a language model quotable, attributable, factually specific passages to pull from.
Schema and structured data enable retrieval — they don't guarantee citation
Structured data (FAQ, HowTo, Article, Organization schema) makes your content machine-readable, which is necessary but not sufficient. It helps a generative engine understand what a page is about; it doesn't force the engine to select that page over a competing source with stronger authority signals.
The trap: treating schema markup as the whole GEO program rather than the technical foundation underneath content quality and authority work.
Optimizing for one engine can miss the others
As the comparison above shows, Perplexity, ChatGPT search, Google AI Overviews and Copilot each retrieve through a different mechanism. A program built purely around Google AI Overviews behavior won't automatically transfer to Perplexity, which crawls and indexes independently. The fundamentals — clear structure, quotable statistics, credible sourcing — hold across all of them, which is why we build for the fundamentals rather than gaming one platform's current quirks.
GEO Foundation
Schema, structured data and content restructuring so your existing pages become retrievable and quotable.
For most businesses, this is the starting tier: an audit of your highest-value pages against what generative engines actually need — direct-answer openings, clean structure, verifiable facts — followed by the technical work to fix the gaps.
What you get
A citation-gap audit against your target queries, schema and structured data implementation (FAQ, HowTo, Organization, Article), AI-crawler access review (GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended and related user agents), and restructured content on your priority pages with direct-answer openings and specific, sourced statistics.
What it's not
Not an ongoing authority-building program, and not a guarantee of citation in any specific engine — see how we measure for why no one can promise that.
Best for: businesses with existing content that ranks reasonably well but has never been structured for AI retrieval, or anyone building a new content program who wants the foundation right from the start.
Full GEO Program
Everything in Foundation and Authority, plus ongoing citation tracking across engines and monthly reporting.
For businesses treating AI search as a genuine acquisition channel rather than a one-off project, this tier combines the technical and authority work with continuous monitoring — checking, engine by engine, whether your brand is actually being cited for the queries that matter, and adjusting when it isn't.
What you get
Everything in Foundation and Authority, plus monthly citation checks across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews for your priority queries, competitor citation comparison, and a report tied to actual citation presence rather than vanity metrics.
What it's not
Not a fit if you haven't validated that your buyers actually research via AI chat — see the FAQ below on how we help you check that first.
Best for: established brands ready to treat GEO as a standing discipline alongside SEO, with the content volume and budget to sustain ongoing authority work.
From audit to ongoing citation tracking
The same six steps whether it's a one-time foundation project or a full program.
- Citation-gap audit. We check whether your brand currently appears when target queries are asked of ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, and diagnose where the gap is — technical, structural, or authority.
- Technical foundation. Schema and structured data implementation, and a review of which AI crawlers (GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended and related agents) are allowed or blocked in your robots.txt.
- Content restructuring. Direct-answer openings, specific statistics with sources, and clear structure applied to your priority pages — the interventions the founding GEO research found measurably improved visibility in generated answers.
- Authority building. Original data, expert attribution and third-party placements, aimed at the kind of cross-referenced credibility generative engines already favor.
- Distribution beyond your own site. Since engines over-cite established third-party authorities, part of the work is earning presence on sites they already trust, not just publishing on your own domain.
- Monitor and report. Recheck citation presence across engines on a set schedule, and adjust the program based on what's actually appearing — not on ranking position alone.
How we measure — and what we won't claim
GEO is a young, fast-moving field with a lot of confident-sounding marketing. Here's where we stand.
- The numbers on this page come from Pew Research Center's independent study of real browsing behavior and the peer-reviewed academic paper that coined the term GEO — not vendor marketing. Where we couldn't find a credible, independently reproducible source for a platform-specific statistic, we left it out rather than publish something that sounded precise but wasn't.
- We don't guarantee citation in any specific AI engine. These are black-box, frequently updated systems that even their own researchers describe as offering content creators little direct control over when and how content is displayed. Anyone who guarantees a citation is overselling.
- GEO doesn't replace SEO. Pew's own data shows the large majority of Google searches — 82% in their study — still don't produce an AI summary at all, and standard organic results still get clicked in those cases. The traditional page still matters.
- Be skeptical of extremely precise "% increase in AI citations" claims. Much of the current GEO content online is self-published SEO-tool marketing with implausibly specific, unverifiable numbers. We'd rather tell you a range is uncertain than invent a figure that sounds authoritative.
- We'll tell you when GEO isn't the priority yet. If a business has no citable content or authority footprint to begin with, foundational SEO and content marketing work comes first — GEO amplifies an existing foundation, it doesn't replace one.
Frequently asked questions
What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?
GEO is the practice of structuring web content so AI-powered search and chat tools — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot — retrieve it, trust it, and cite it when generating an answer. The term was coined in a 2024 peer-reviewed paper from researchers at Princeton, Georgia Tech, the Allen Institute for AI and IIT Delhi, presented at the ACM SIGKDD conference.
How is GEO different from traditional SEO?
SEO optimizes for ranking in a list of blue links a person then chooses to click. GEO optimizes for being the source a generative engine synthesizes directly into its answer — the person may never see a list of links at all. The two disciplines share a technical foundation (crawlability, structured data, authority) but the content techniques that earn a citation are different from the ones that earn a top-10 ranking.
How is GEO different from Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
The terms overlap and are often used interchangeably. We treat AEO as the broader discipline of winning direct answers — featured snippets, voice search results, Google's AI Overviews — while GEO is more specific to being cited as a source inside a generative chat engine like ChatGPT or Perplexity. If you want the full picture across SEO, AEO and GEO together, see our AI SEO services page.
Can you guarantee my brand will be cited by ChatGPT or Perplexity?
No, and we'd be wary of any agency that says yes. These are proprietary, frequently updated systems outside any agency's control, and the researchers who built the original GEO framework describe content creators as having little direct control over when and how their content is displayed. What we commit to is building the structural, technical and authority signals that measurably improve the odds — and reporting honestly on what's actually appearing.
Does ranking #1 on Google guarantee an AI Overview citation?
No. Independent research from Pew Research Center found Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit are the most frequently cited sources in Google's AI summaries, and government sites are cited roughly three times more often in AI summaries than in standard search results — evidence that AI Overviews weight sources differently from a standard ranking. A top organic position helps, but it isn't the same signal.
How do you measure GEO results?
We track whether your brand is actually cited when your priority queries are asked of ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, checked on a regular schedule, alongside standard organic visibility. We report the citations we find and the ones we don't — not a vanity "visibility score" with no clear underlying methodology.
Do I need to allow or block AI crawlers like GPTBot?
It depends on your goal. Allowing crawlers such as GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended lets those engines use your content, which is generally necessary if you want to be cited in their answers. Some businesses choose to allow the "search" or "user" variants of these agents (which power live answers) while blocking the base training crawlers. We review this with you rather than apply one default policy to every client.
How long does GEO take to show results?
Technical foundation work (schema, structured data, content restructuring) typically ships within the 3–4 week Foundation timeline. Citation appearance depends on factors outside our control, including how often each engine re-crawls and re-indexes content, so we treat the first citation checks after launch as a baseline to track from, not a guaranteed early win.
