AI SEO Services: Win Citations in Google AI Overviews, AI Mode & ChatGPT

Search stopped being ten blue links. We optimize your site to still get found — and get cited — inside Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Bing Copilot, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, without abandoning the organic rankings that still drive most of your traffic.

The four things AI SEO actually covers

"AI SEO" gets used as a catch-all. In practice it's four distinct workstreams, and most sites need all four.

Google's own AI surfaces
Structured data · E-E-A-T · crawlability

Google merged AI Overviews and AI Mode into one fluid experience in January 2026. Eligibility still runs on standard Search fundamentals — see what Google's own documentation says below.

This sits alongside our core SEO services — AI SEO doesn't replace traditional SEO, it extends it. If content production is the bottleneck, pair this with content marketing and copywriting; if authority is the gap, see link building.

The part most agencies get wrong

"SGE" retired in 2024 — here's what actually runs today

A lot of AI SEO advice still floating around the web describes a product Google stopped shipping two years ago. Worth being precise about the timeline, because the terminology signals whether an agency is current.

01

Search Generative Experience became AI Overviews in May 2024

Google trialled "Search Generative Experience" (SGE) as a Search Labs opt-in from May 2023. At Google I/O on 14 May 2024, it graduated out of Labs and shipped to everyone under a new name: AI Overviews. Any checklist that still says "optimize for SGE" is describing a product that no longer exists under that name.

02

AI Mode launched alongside it, then the two surfaces merged

AI Mode — a fuller, conversational search surface — rolled out to all US users from Google I/O 2025. In January 2026, Google merged the two experiences: tapping "Show more" under an AI Overview now flows a searcher straight into an AI Mode conversation that remembers context across follow-up questions. That merge deepened further through 2026.

What this means for your content: the target isn't a static snippet any more — it's being usable as source material for a multi-turn conversation, which rewards clear structure and complete answers over keyword density.

03

Google's own guidance: there's no secret AI-specific checklist

Google published a consolidated optimization guide for its AI features in May 2026, and it's unusually direct. It states there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond standard Search eligibility — and explicitly tells site owners they can ignore llms.txt files, artificially "chunking" content for AI, and bolting on special schema that isn't otherwise useful. Google frames AEO and GEO for its own surfaces as "still SEO," not a separate discipline.

That doesn't extend to every AI platform — ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot may weight signals differently, and citation behaviour there is still being reverse-engineered industry-wide. We'll be upfront about which claims are Google-confirmed and which are our own observation. See what we won't claim.

The new age of search

SEO vs. AEO vs. GEO — what each one actually optimizes for

Three overlapping disciplines, three different jobs. Most businesses need a blend, not a single choice.

Where AI actually changes the work

Five ways AI genuinely changes SEO — and where it's overstated

Some of this is real leverage. Some of it is vendor hype. Here's where we draw that line.

01

From reactive to predictive — with real limits

Traditional SEO often means noticing a ranking drop and reacting. AI-assisted trend tools (Google Trends signals, Exploding Topics and similar) surface emerging queries earlier, so content can publish ahead of a topic peaking rather than months after. This is genuinely useful for planning an editorial calendar — it is not a guarantee of ranking, and no tool reliably predicts algorithm updates before they land.

02

Being cited pays more than being ranked

Ranking #1 on a query that now shows an AI Overview doesn't guarantee a click — organic click-through on those queries has fallen sharply as AI Overviews became more common. The response isn't to abandon rankings; it's to make pages easy for an AI system to lift a correct, attributable answer from: clear structure, one claim per paragraph where possible, named expertise, and structured data that's accurate (not stuffed).

What we actually do: audit your highest-traffic pages for extractable, quotable answers — not add speculative "AI schema" that Google's own guidance says doesn't help.

03

Efficiency at scale — audits in hours, not weeks

This is where AI tooling delivers the least ambiguous win. Site audits that used to take a week of manual crawling now run in hours with Screaming Frog paired with AI-assisted analysis add-ons. Keyword clustering that used to be spreadsheet work is largely automated. We pass that speed to you as faster turnaround, not as a reason to skip human review of the findings.

04

Smarter content, not more content

Publishing volume stopped being the lever it once was. We use AI for the mechanical first pass — outlines, research synthesis, structural drafts — and spend the saved time on what AI can't supply: your original data, client case studies, and positions only someone in your industry would actually hold. Google's spam policy on scaled content abuse applies to AI-generated pages exactly as it does to any low-effort content, so volume without added value is a liability, not a shortcut.

05

Deeper competitive insight, faster

AI-assisted backlink and content-gap analysis (tools like Ahrefs or SurferSEO with an AI overlay) can turn a raw export into a short list of "why they're cited and you're not" findings in minutes rather than days. We use this to prioritise the link and content targets most likely to move visibility, not to generate a report nobody reads.

01 — Start here if you don't know where you stand

AI Search Visibility Audit

A complete diagnosis of how your site currently shows up — or doesn't — across Google's AI surfaces and the major AI chat platforms.

Timeline2–3 weeks

We check whether your key pages currently appear as sources in AI Overviews and AI Mode for your priority queries, run a baseline citation check across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, and audit your structured data, E-E-A-T signals and content structure against Google's own published guidance — not third-party speculation.

What you get

AI Overview and AI Mode presence check for your priority keywords, a baseline citation scan across major AI chat platforms, structured data and schema audit, an E-E-A-T gap review, and a prioritised fix roadmap ranked by expected impact versus effort.

What it's not

It's not implementation — the audit tells you what to fix and why, not code. And it's not a promise of citation: no agency can guarantee inclusion in a system it doesn't control, and we'll say so plainly rather than sell you certainty that doesn't exist.

Best for: businesses who suspect their organic clicks are dropping because of AI Overviews and want evidence before committing budget, and anyone who wants a current, myth-free read on where they actually stand.

02 — The most popular engagement

AI SEO Implementation Sprint

Audit plus execution: schema, content structure and technical fixes shipped, prioritised by what actually moves AI visibility.

Timeline6–8 weeks

The sprint takes the audit's findings and ships them: structured data implementation (FAQ, HowTo, Article, Organization schema where genuinely applicable), restructuring your highest-traffic pages into clear, extractable answers, tightening E-E-A-T signals (author bios, sourcing, original data), and closing the technical gaps that block crawlability. This runs alongside — not instead of — your existing SEO work.

What you get

Everything in the audit, plus schema and structured data implementation, content restructuring on priority pages, technical SEO fixes, weekly progress check-ins, and a before/after visibility report against the citation baseline from the audit.

What it's not

Not a guarantee of a specific AI Overview appearance or chatbot citation — no one outside Google, OpenAI, Anthropic or Perplexity controls that outcome. And it's not a content mill: we won't publish AI-drafted pages at volume with no human editing, because Google's spam policy treats that as scaled content abuse regardless of intent.

Best for: sites with a confirmed visibility gap from the audit, and teams too stretched to implement schema and content restructuring themselves.

03 — For businesses treating this as ongoing, not a one-off

Ongoing AI SEO & Citation Monitoring Retainer

AI platforms change monthly. A retainer tracks the shift and keeps your content current instead of auditing it once and walking away.

CommitmentMonthly · 3-mo min

Google merged AI Overviews and AI Mode in January 2026 and kept iterating through the year; ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini update their retrieval behaviour on their own timelines. A one-time sprint captures today's landscape. A retainer tracks brand and citation mentions across AI platforms monthly, refreshes content as query patterns shift, and monitors your Core Web Vitals and technical health alongside it.

What you get

Monthly brand and citation monitoring across Google's AI surfaces, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, content refresh cycles as queries and formats shift, ongoing schema maintenance, real-time performance dashboards, and quarterly strategy reviews. Pairs naturally with our content marketing and link building services.

What it's not

Not worth it if your content library is thin — a retainer optimizes and monitors what exists; if you need substantial new content first, start with the sprint plus blogging or guest posting to build the base.

Best for: established sites with meaningful existing content, businesses in fast-moving categories where being the cited source is a real revenue lever, and anyone who wants an AI-search partner rather than a once-a-year check-in.

Decision path

How an engagement runs

The same sequence every time: diagnose current AI visibility before touching a single page.

  1. Scoping call (free). We look at your site, your priority queries and your goals, and tell you honestly which engagement fits — or whether traditional SEO is still your bigger lever.
  2. Baseline visibility check. We record where you currently stand in AI Overviews, AI Mode and the major AI chat platforms for your priority queries. No baseline, no honest "after."
  3. Structured audit. Schema and structured data review, E-E-A-T signal check, content extractability review, and a technical SEO pass — checked against Google's own AI features documentation, not third-party guesswork.
  4. Prioritised roadmap. Every finding scored on expected visibility impact versus implementation effort, so quick wins ship before the larger structural work.
  5. Implement. Schema, content restructuring and technical fixes shipped on your platform, with weekly check-ins during a sprint.
  6. Report against baseline. The citation and visibility numbers from step 2, revisited — what moved, what didn't, and what we'd do next.

What we won't claim

AI search attracts inflated promises faster than almost any other corner of marketing. Here's where we stand.

  • We don't guarantee inclusion in AI Overviews, AI Mode, or any chatbot's answer. Nobody outside Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity and Microsoft controls those systems. Anyone promising guaranteed AI citations is guessing.
  • We don't sell special "AI schema" that isn't otherwise useful. Google's own May 2026 guidance says llms.txt files, artificial content chunking, and bolt-on AI-specific markup aren't required for its AI features. We implement schema because it's good structured-data practice, not because it's a secret unlock.
  • The stat trackers disagree with each other, and we say so. AI Overview prevalence estimates range from roughly 43% to 60% of Google searches depending on the tracker and methodology — we cite our source and its measurement date rather than presenting one number as settled fact.
  • We separate what Google confirms from what's still industry observation. Google's documentation covers its own AI features. How ChatGPT, Perplexity or Copilot actually weight sources is still being reverse-engineered across the industry, and we won't present a competitor's blog theory as Google-level certainty.
  • We won't publish AI-drafted content at volume with no human review. Google's spam policy on scaled content abuse applies to AI-generated pages exactly as it does to any thin content — and it isn't work we'd want our name on regardless of the policy.
  • We'll tell you when AI SEO isn't your bottleneck. If your traffic problem is really a paid-acquisition gap or a conversion issue, we'll route you to PPC or conversion rate optimization rather than sell an engagement you don't need.
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is AI SEO?

AI SEO is the practice of optimizing a website to be found and cited across AI-powered search surfaces — Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Bing Copilot, and AI chat platforms like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini — alongside traditional organic rankings. It isn't a replacement for SEO; Google's own documentation describes it as an extension of standard SEO fundamentals, applied with an eye toward how AI systems extract and cite answers.

What's the difference between AEO and GEO?

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is about winning the direct answer slot — featured snippets, voice assistant replies, and the top answer in an AI Overview. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is narrower: it's specifically about becoming the source that generative chat platforms like ChatGPT and Perplexity cite or recommend in a conversational answer. GEO is best understood as a subset of the broader AEO goal, applied to chat-based platforms rather than Google's own search results.

Is "SGE" (Search Generative Experience) still a thing?

No. Google retired the SGE name at I/O in May 2024, when it graduated the feature out of Search Labs and relaunched it publicly as AI Overviews. AI Mode followed in 2025 as a separate, more conversational surface, and Google merged the two experiences starting in January 2026. If a guide or agency is still talking about "optimizing for SGE," that's a sign the advice is at least two years out of date.

Do I need special files like llms.txt or AI-specific schema?

Not according to Google. Its May 2026 optimization guide states plainly that there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond standard Search eligibility, and specifically tells site owners they can ignore llms.txt files, content "chunking" for AI, and bolt-on AI-specific schema. We implement structured data because it's sound SEO practice — not because it's an AI-only trick.

Do I still need traditional SEO if I invest in AI SEO?

Yes — traditional SEO is the foundation AI visibility is built on. Google's own guidance frames AEO and GEO for its surfaces as "still SEO," not a separate discipline, and roughly half of Google searches still show the traditional ten-blue-links results with no AI Overview at all. Dropping standard SEO to chase AI citations would cost you the traffic that isn't affected by this shift.

Can you guarantee we'll be cited in ChatGPT or Google's AI Overviews?

No, and we'd be skeptical of anyone who says yes. Inclusion in an AI-generated answer is decided by systems Google, OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity control, not by any agency. What we commit to: a structured, evidence-based audit of your current visibility, fixes grounded in each platform's own published guidance where it exists, and honest reporting on what moved and what didn't.

How long before we see results?

The audit typically takes 2–3 weeks and gives you a current baseline immediately. Structural changes from the implementation sprint — schema, content restructuring — usually show up in AI Overview and citation tracking within 4–8 weeks after publishing, though this varies by platform and how frequently each AI system re-crawls your content. Continuous improvement is the retainer's job, not a single sprint's.

What does AI SEO cost?

We quote after a free scoping call, because a five-page local business site and a 500-page content library need very different scopes of work. The audit is the smallest fixed-scope engagement and the usual starting point; the sprint is priced from the audit's findings; the retainer is a monthly fee with a three-month minimum. We don't quote a number before seeing your site.
