Where your content sits today

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content to win the direct-answer features on a search results page — featured snippets, "People Also Ask" boxes, Google AI Overviews and voice assistant answers — rather than just ranking as a blue link. It sits under our broader AI SEO (SEO + AEO + GEO) services; if you want the layer that covers being cited inside ChatGPT and Perplexity specifically, see our Generative Engine Optimization services instead.

Ranking on page 1 already, want the box above it
Requires an existing top-10 ranking

Nearly every featured snippet comes from a page already ranking in Google's top 10 — so if you're there but not in the box, this is usually a formatting and structure fix, not a new content project.

Question-heavy niche — how-to, comparisons, troubleshooting
Ongoing content creation

PAA boxes reward direct, specific answers to individual questions, not one broad page trying to cover everything. This tier builds the question-by-question content library that earns those spots.

Want visibility in Google's AI Overviews specifically
Long-tail, informational queries only

AI Overview keywords skew heavily toward long-tail, informational, low-competition queries — 99.2% informational intent by Ahrefs' data — so this works best paired with a genuine content-depth strategy, not a single landing page.

The mechanics

SERP features compared

Each answer feature is won differently — treating them as one undifferentiated goal usually means winning none of them.

Comparison of answer-engine SERP features, what triggers them, and what content work can influence
What triggers itPrerequisiteWhat we can influence
Featured SnippetA concise, well-structured direct answer near the top of a pageTop-10 ranking requiredContent structure, format matching (paragraph/list/table), answer placement
People Also AskSpecific, narrow questions with a clear single answerBroad, not tied to one rankingDirect Q&A formatting, FAQ schema, comprehensive question coverage
Google AI OverviewLong-tail, informational, question-style queriesUsually top-10 or top-20 sourcedContent depth, structured data, factual specificity, mobile readiness
Voice assistant answerTypically reads the existing featured snippet aloudFeatured snippet ownershipSame work as featured snippet optimization — there's no separate voice-only format

Figures cited on this page are dated to their actual publication, not implied to be brand-new: the featured-snippet mechanics are from Ahrefs' 2017 study of 2 million snippets (still the most-cited methodology for how the "top 10 requirement" works); the AI Overview data is from Ahrefs' 2024 analysis of 300K keywords; the click-behavior data is from Pew Research's 2025 study. Common misunderstandings

Where AEO gets misunderstood

Four patterns we see when a business's first attempt at AEO doesn't move the needle.

01

Winning a featured snippet doesn't always mean more traffic

Ahrefs' original 2017 study found that a page holding the #1 featured snippet position got only about 8.6% of clicks on average, while the page ranking directly below it got roughly 19.6% — more than double. A regular #1 ranking with no snippet above it captured about 26%. The snippet can answer the question well enough that the searcher never clicks at all.

The trap: chasing every available snippet as an unqualified win, when for some queries the honest goal is qualified traffic, not the box itself.

02

You can't win a snippet without already ranking in the top 10

99.58% of featured snippets are pulled from pages already ranking in Google's top 10 organic results, per Ahrefs' data. AEO isn't a shortcut around ranking — it's a way to extract more value from a ranking you've already earned through core SEO work.

03

AI Overviews reward long-tail questions, not your homepage

Ahrefs' analysis of AI-Overview-triggering keywords found they skew heavily toward informational intent (99.2%) and longer, more specific phrasing than typical searches. A broad "our services" page rarely fits this pattern — the content that wins here answers one specific question thoroughly.

The trap: pointing AEO effort at high-level marketing pages instead of the specific, narrow questions your buyers are actually typing.

04

One static page can't win every question in your niche

People Also Ask boxes and AI Overviews both reward direct, narrow answers to individual questions — not one page trying to cover a whole topic. See the comparison above for how each feature's requirements differ; the fix is usually a library of focused answer content, not a longer version of one page.

01 — For pages already ranking, not yet featured

Snippet & Schema Foundation

Audit your existing top-10 pages, restructure for direct answers, and implement the schema that supports it.

Timeline2–3 weeks

Since almost every featured snippet comes from an already-ranking page, the fastest AEO win is usually fixing the pages you already have rather than building new ones. This tier audits your top-10 rankings for snippet opportunities and restructures the content to match what Google's snippet format expects.

What you get

A snippet-opportunity audit across your existing top-10 rankings, content restructuring to match the winning format (paragraph, list or table) for each target query, FAQ and HowTo schema implementation, and a report on which snippets were won and which are still open.

What it's not

Not new content creation for queries you don't already rank for — see Question Content Expansion if you need new pages built.

Best for: businesses with existing page-one rankings who aren't yet winning the featured snippet, PAA box or AI Overview above their own listing.

02 — New content for the questions you don't cover yet

Question Content Expansion

A growing library of narrow, direct-answer content built to win People Also Ask and AI Overview placements.

TimelineOngoing, monthly

PAA boxes and AI Overviews reward specific answers to specific questions. This tier identifies the real questions your buyers are asking — through search data, not guesswork — and builds focused content to answer each one directly, rather than trying to stretch one page to cover everything.

What you get

Ongoing question research tied to your actual buyer journey, new content built around one question at a time with schema markup applied from the start, and internal linking that connects the growing answer library back to your core service pages.

What it's not

Not a fit if your existing top-10 pages already have unclaimed snippet opportunities — start with Snippet & Schema Foundation first, since that's usually the faster win.

Best for: businesses in question-heavy niches — how-to, comparison, troubleshooting content — who want to build out topical coverage rather than fix a handful of existing pages.

03 — Foundation and expansion, tracked together

Full AEO Program

Everything in Foundation and Expansion, plus ongoing SERP-feature tracking and monthly reporting.

Timeline3-month minimum

For businesses ready to treat direct-answer visibility as an ongoing discipline: fixing existing pages, building out new question-focused content, and tracking which snippets, PAA boxes and AI Overviews you actually hold — because Google reshuffles these placements constantly, and last month's win isn't guaranteed to still be yours today.

What you get

Everything in Snippet & Schema Foundation and Question Content Expansion, plus monthly SERP-feature tracking across your priority queries, competitor snippet-ownership comparison, and reporting tied to actual feature placement rather than ranking position alone.

What it's not

Not a fit if you haven't validated that AEO matters for your query set yet — start with a smaller tier and confirm the opportunity first.

Best for: established content sites and service businesses in competitive, question-driven categories who want a standing program rather than a one-time fix.

How we work

From audit to ongoing tracking

The same six steps whether it's a one-time foundation project or a full program.

  1. Ranking & snippet audit. We check which of your existing top-10 pages have an unclaimed featured snippet, PAA or AI Overview opportunity above them.
  2. Schema & structured data. FAQ, HowTo and Article schema implemented so Google can parse your content's format correctly.
  3. Content restructuring. Direct-answer openings matched to the winning snippet format — paragraph, list or table — for each target query.
  4. Question content creation. New, narrow answer content for the specific questions your buyers ask that you don't cover yet.
  5. Monitor SERP feature changes. Featured snippets, PAA boxes and AI Overviews reshuffle constantly — we track which placements you hold and which competitors have taken.
  6. Report. A monthly readout on actual feature placement, not just ranking position, alongside honest notes on where a "win" didn't move traffic.

How we measure — and what we won't claim

AEO is an old idea wearing new "AI" branding, and it attracts inflated promises. Here's where we stand.

  • Every figure on this page is dated to when it was actually published — Ahrefs' 2017 featured snippet mechanics study, Ahrefs' 2024 AI Overview keyword analysis, and Pew Research's 2025 click-behavior study — not repackaged under a "2026" label to look fresher than it is. We found several other sources doing exactly that during research and declined to use them.
  • We don't guarantee a featured snippet, PAA placement or AI Overview citation. Google selects and reshuffles these algorithmically; no agency controls that outcome directly.
  • Winning the box doesn't always mean more clicks. As the mechanics section above shows, some snippet wins reduce click-through rather than increase it. We track this honestly rather than report every placement as an unqualified win.
  • AEO builds on existing SEO — it doesn't replace it. A page with no organic ranking has essentially no chance at a featured snippet regardless of formatting, since 99.58% of snippets come from already-ranking pages. If your core rankings need work first, we'll say so and point you to SEO services.
  • We'll tell you when the query isn't worth the effort. Some snippet opportunities sit on low-volume, low-intent queries where the work costs more than the traffic is worth — we'll flag those rather than pad a report with technically-true wins.
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

AEO is the practice of structuring content to win the direct-answer features on a search page — featured snippets, "People Also Ask" boxes, Google AI Overviews and voice assistant answers — rather than just ranking as a standard blue link. It's about being the answer, not just a result.

How is AEO different from regular SEO?

SEO gets your page into the top 10 organic results. AEO is the layer on top of that: formatting, structuring and marking up content so it can be selected for the featured snippet, PAA box or AI Overview above those results. You need the SEO ranking first — 99.58% of featured snippets come from pages already in the top 10 — so AEO extends existing SEO work rather than substituting for it.

How is AEO different from GEO?

AEO targets the direct-answer features on a traditional Google search results page — snippets, PAA, AI Overviews, voice answers. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) targets being cited as a source inside a generative chat interface like ChatGPT or Perplexity, where there's no traditional results page at all. The two overlap in technique but serve different platforms — see our GEO services page for that layer.

Can you guarantee my page will get a featured snippet?

No. Google selects and changes featured snippets, PAA boxes and AI Overviews algorithmically, and no agency controls that selection directly. What we commit to: content structured the way winning snippets are documented to look, schema implemented correctly, and honest reporting on what's actually won versus still open.

Does winning a featured snippet reduce my website traffic?

Sometimes, yes — and we'd rather tell you that than oversell every snippet as a pure win. Ahrefs' data shows a featured snippet at position #1 can capture fewer clicks than the position directly below it, because some searchers get their answer from the snippet text and never click through. It's still usually worth pursuing for brand visibility and the queries where it does drive qualified traffic, but we track click impact honestly rather than assume every placement helps.

What is a "People Also Ask" box?

It's the expandable list of related questions that appears in Google search results, each revealing a direct answer sourced from a ranking page when clicked. PAA boxes appear alongside a large share of AI Overview results too, which makes them a useful proxy for the kind of direct, specific content that performs well across both traditional and AI-powered search.

Do you handle voice search optimization specifically?

Yes, though it's not a separate discipline from featured snippet work — voice assistants like Google Assistant typically read the existing featured snippet aloud rather than generating a distinct answer. Winning the featured snippet is, in practice, how you win the voice answer too.

How do you measure AEO success?

We track actual SERP feature placement — whether you hold the featured snippet, appear in relevant PAA boxes, or get cited in AI Overviews for your priority queries — checked on a regular schedule, alongside the click-through impact of each placement. Ranking position alone isn't the metric; what's actually showing in the box is.
