Which Shopify service do you actually need?

Four situations cover most of the enquiries we get. Find yours, then read the detail below.

YOU HAVE NO STORE YET
Typically 2–3 weeks

Domain, theme, products, collections, an Indian payment gateway, shipping zones, GST-aware tax settings and analytics — configured once, correctly. You get a store you can actually operate, not a demo.

Details below ↓ See scope
YOUR STORE LOOKS LIKE THE THEME DEMO
Typically 3–6 weeks

A theme is a layout, not a brand. We rebuild the visual system — type, colour, product page hierarchy, banners, iconography — so the store looks like you and reads clearly on a phone.

Details below ↓ See scope
YOU'RE MOVING OFF ANOTHER PLATFORM
Typically 3–5 weeks

WooCommerce, Magento, OpenCart, PrestaShop or BigCommerce to Shopify with products, customers and order history intact — and a redirect map built before launch, not after rankings drop.

Details below ↓ See scope
SOMETHING IS BROKEN OR SLOW
Monthly retainer

App conflicts, checkout errors, theme updates that break sections, Core Web Vitals failures, security hygiene and backups. Most stores that feel "slow on Shopify" have an app problem, not a platform problem.

The analytical part

Five things that decide whether a Shopify store works

These are the patterns we see across builds, audits and rescue projects. None of them are Shopify's fault, and all of them are avoidable.

01

In India your Shopify fee stack has two layers, not one

Shopify Payments has not launched in India, so every Indian store settles through a domestic gateway — Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree, CCAvenue, Instamojo or Paytm. That triggers Shopify's third-party transaction fee on top of what the gateway charges. Shopify's own India pricing page lists that fee as 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus. Razorpay's published standard rate is 2% plus GST on domestic cards, UPI, net banking and wallets, with premium methods such as EMI, Amex and Pay Later around 3%.

So a ₹2,000 order on Basic can carry roughly 4% in combined fees before you count the subscription. That is not a reason to avoid Shopify — it is a reason to model the maths before you pick a plan, because on volume the jump from Basic to Grow can pay for itself purely on the fee difference.

The trap: comparing platforms on subscription price alone. The subscription is the small number. Gateway plus platform transaction fees are the number that scales with your revenue.

02

A purchased theme is a starting point, not a design

Shopify's Theme Store has free themes maintained by Shopify plus paid themes that are a one-time purchase, generally in the US$140–500 band. Both are competent. Neither is your brand. The demo store you liked was populated with professional photography, a curated product mix and copy written for the demo — swap in your catalogue and the same theme often reads as cluttered and generic.

Custom design work on Shopify is mostly about hierarchy: what a shopper sees first on the product page, how variants and sizing are presented, where trust signals sit, how collection filtering behaves on a 375px screen. We keep the theme's update path intact wherever possible and do the work through Online Store 2.0 sections and blocks rather than forking the theme into something that can never be updated again.

The trap: paying for a premium theme and then paying again to undo its defaults. Decide the design direction first; pick the theme that is closest to it.

03

App sprawl, not Shopify, is why most stores feel slow

Shopify hosts the storefront, so raw server speed is rarely the problem. What is slow is the accumulated JavaScript from a dozen apps — reviews, upsells, popups, currency switchers, wishlists, chat widgets, three analytics tags — each injecting scripts into every page, including ones where the feature is never used. Many stores keep paying for apps they abandoned months ago while still loading their code.

Our audit inventories every app, checks whether its script is present on pages that need it, and removes or defers the rest. Where an app exists only to do something a theme section could do natively, we build the section instead. This is the same discipline we apply in our e-commerce UX optimization work, measured against Google's Core Web Vitals rather than a vanity score.

The trap: uninstalling an app and assuming its code left with it. Leftover theme snippets and script tags are extremely common and need to be removed by hand.

04

Migration protects rankings only if redirects are planned before launch

Shopify enforces its own URL structure — /products/, /collections/, /pages/. If your WooCommerce or Magento store used a different scheme, every existing URL changes. Products, customers and order history migrate reliably with the right tooling; search equity only survives if a complete old-to-new redirect map is written and tested before the DNS switch.

We export the old URL set, map every page that has traffic or backlinks to its Shopify equivalent, carry across titles, meta descriptions and image alt text, and keep a post-launch crawl running for a few weeks to catch what the map missed. Discontinued products get redirected to the closest live product or their collection, never to the homepage.

The trap: migrating on a weekend and dealing with redirects on Monday. By then Google has already crawled a site full of 404s.

05

Checkout is where the money leaks, and you control less of it than you think

Baymard Institute puts the average documented cart abandonment rate at 70.22% across 50 studies, and finds that a meaningfully large share of abandonment traces to a checkout that is too long or too complicated. Shopify's checkout is largely fixed by design — which is a genuine advantage, since it is tested at enormous scale — but that also means the fix usually sits before checkout: shipping cost visible on the product page, delivery estimates before the address step, a payment mix that matches how your customers actually pay.

In India that last point matters more than anywhere else. UPI is table stakes, cash on delivery still converts in large parts of the market, and a checkout offering only card payments quietly loses orders. Where deeper checkout changes are needed, only the Plus plan exposes real checkout customisation — worth knowing before you promise yourself a bespoke checkout on Basic.

The trap: treating abandonment as a remarketing problem. Email recovery helps at the margin; removing the reason for abandonment helps more.

Cost reality

Shopify plans in India, and what they really cost

Shopify plan prices and transaction-fee percentages read from shopify.com/in/pricing on 29 July 2026 and exclude GST. Staff-account, inventory-location and checkout-customisation rows are from the same page's feature comparison. Shopify Payments availability confirmed as not launched in India as of this date — verify at signup, since this can change. Gateway rates are set by your provider, not by us: Razorpay publishes 2% + GST as its standard domestic rate.

How to read this: if you process ₹10 lakh a month, the 1% fee difference between Basic and Grow is ₹10,000 — more than the ₹4,100 price gap between the plans. Below roughly ₹4–5 lakh monthly, Basic usually stays cheaper. We run this calculation with your real numbers during the scoping call.

What we do

Our six Shopify services

Each one is scoped and quoted separately. Most clients start with one and add others later.

01 — Launch

Store creation & setup

A complete, operable Shopify store configured from a blank account.

Typical timeline2–3 weeks

We set up the account and domain, select and install a theme that fits your catalogue, structure products with proper variants and metafields, build collections and navigation, connect an Indian payment gateway, define shipping zones and rates, configure tax settings, and install only the apps you genuinely need on day one. Analytics is part of the build, not an afterthought: Google Tag Manager, GA4 and your social pixels go in before launch so your first campaign has clean data.

What you get

A store you can run yourself: products organised sensibly, orders flowing to a gateway that settles to your bank, shipping and tax that produce correct totals, analytics recording from the first session, and a walkthrough session so your team knows where everything lives.

What it's not

Not a custom design — setup uses a Theme Store theme configured well, not a bespoke visual system. Not product photography or copywriting, though we can quote both. Not a guarantee of traffic: a live store with no marketing behind it stays quiet.

Best for: first-time sellers and brands moving from Instagram-only or marketplace-only selling who need a correct foundation quickly.

02 — Design

Custom store design

A visual system built around your brand, not the theme demo's.

Typical timeline3–6 weeks

We design the pages that carry your revenue — homepage, collection, product, cart drawer, and the content pages that build trust — then implement them as Online Store 2.0 sections so your team can rearrange them without a developer. Type scale, colour, spacing, banners, icons and imagery are treated as one system rather than page-by-page decoration. Mobile is designed first, because that is where most Indian D2C traffic arrives.

What you get

Designs reviewed with you before any code is written, a consistent component set across templates, editable sections rather than hard-coded blocks, and a store that reads clearly at 375px. Our UI/UX design and conversion optimization practices inform the layout decisions.

What it's not

Not a promise of a specific conversion lift — design changes need to be measured on your traffic before anyone can claim a number. Not a full replatform. And if your product photography is inconsistent, design can only partly hide it.

Best for: brands with a live store, real traffic, and a nagging sense that the site undersells the product.

03 — Development

Custom functionality & integrations

The features no app in the store does the way you need it.

Typical timeline2–8 weeks by scope

Advanced collection filtering, bundle and kit logic, made-to-order or size-customisation flows, subscription mechanics, B2B price lists, and cart experiences that behave the way your buyers shop. On the integration side we connect Shopify to ERP, inventory, accounting, CRM and marketing platforms using the Admin and Storefront APIs so stock and order data stop being re-typed between systems. Where a headless build is genuinely justified we will say so — and where it isn't, we will say that too, because Shopify plans below Plus allow a single headless storefront and the maintenance cost is real.

What you get

A written technical scope before we quote, code that lives in versioned theme files or a private app rather than pasted snippets, and documentation for whoever maintains it next. Related work: inventory management, CRM and business automation.

What it's not

Not a way around Shopify's platform limits. Checkout logic below the Plus plan is constrained by Shopify, and no developer can change that. Custom code also carries an ongoing maintenance obligation as Shopify's APIs version — we are upfront about that before you commit.

Best for: stores whose operations have outgrown off-the-shelf apps, and brands with a product configuration no standard variant model handles.

04 — Redesign

Shopify store redesign

Modernise an existing store without throwing away what already works.

Typical timeline4–7 weeks

A redesign starts with evidence, not a mood board. We look at your analytics to find where sessions die, review the store on real devices, and check the technical basics — heading structure, alt text, canonical and URL patterns, Core Web Vitals — before proposing anything. Then we rebuild the weak templates while keeping the URL structure and internal linking that currently earns your organic traffic. Where the case for change is strong but not certain, we stage it so you can compare.

What you get

A prioritised findings document, a redesign that preserves existing URLs and SEO structure, and a launch plan with rollback. Pairs naturally with website redesign and AI SEO work if search visibility is also a concern.

What it's not

Not a guaranteed revenue increase. Redesigns can dip before they climb, which is exactly why we stage changes and keep the old templates recoverable rather than launching everything on one night.

Best for: stores three or more years old, or any store where the design has drifted after years of ad-hoc edits.

05 — Migration

Migration to Shopify

Move from WooCommerce, Magento, OpenCart, PrestaShop or BigCommerce with your data and rankings intact.

Typical timeline3–5 weeks

We migrate products with variants and images, customer records, and order history, then rebuild the storefront on Shopify rather than trying to replicate the old theme pixel for pixel. The SEO work runs in parallel: full URL inventory, a redirect map covering every page with traffic or backlinks, metadata and alt text carried across, sitemap resubmission, and a crawl schedule for the weeks after launch. Nothing goes live until the redirect map passes a test crawl.

What you get

A staged migration you can review before the DNS change, a documented redirect map you keep, and post-launch monitoring. If you are still deciding between platforms, our WooCommerce vs Wix comparison and BigCommerce services pages cover the alternatives honestly.

What it's not

Not lossless in every respect. Some platform-specific data — certain custom fields, plugin-generated content, review histories tied to a plugin — has no Shopify equivalent and needs a decision rather than a migration. We identify those in the audit, before you sign.

Best for: teams spending more time maintaining their store's hosting, updates and security than selling on it.

06 — Support

Maintenance & support

Ongoing Shopify customer service for stores that can't afford to be broken.

EngagementMonthly retainer

Bug fixes, app conflict resolution, theme and app updates applied on a staging copy first, speed and Core Web Vitals monitoring, content and product updates, security hygiene, and scheduled backups. Shopify's own support is good at platform questions; it cannot debug your theme, tell you which of your eleven apps is slowing the product page, or decide whether a feature belongs in an app or a section. That gap is what this service covers.

What you get

A named contact, first response within 24 hours on business days, changes tested on staging before production, and a monthly summary of what was done. Retainers can include ongoing SEO, content or support automation work if you want one team across the stack.

What it's not

Not a 24/7 NOC with a signed uptime SLA — Shopify controls hosting and uptime, not us. Not unlimited development hidden inside a support fee: larger changes are scoped and quoted separately so the retainer stays predictable for both sides.

Best for: stores doing meaningful daily revenue, and lean teams with no in-house Shopify developer.

How we work

From first call to launch

The order matters. Most Shopify projects that go wrong went wrong in the first two steps.

  1. Free scoping call. Thirty minutes on your catalogue, order volume, payment mix, integrations and deadline. We run the plan-and-fee maths with your real numbers here, before anyone talks about design.
  2. Written scope and fixed quote. You get a document listing what is included, what is explicitly excluded, the timeline, and the price. We do not start work off a verbal brief.
  3. Design or audit phase. New builds get page designs to approve. Redesigns and migrations get a findings document with prioritised issues. Nothing is built until you sign off on this.
  4. Build on a staging store. Everything is developed on a duplicate or password-protected store. You review real pages on real devices, not screenshots.
  5. Pre-launch checklist. Payments tested with live small-value orders, shipping and tax totals verified, analytics firing, redirect map crawl-tested, mobile pass on Android and iOS, backup taken.
  6. Launch and watch. DNS switch at a low-traffic hour, then active monitoring for errors, 404s and Core Web Vitals regressions over the following weeks.
  7. Handover and support window. A walkthrough session plus written documentation, then a post-launch support window whose length is stated in your contract — followed by an optional retainer.

Transparency

What we verified, and what we won't claim

Pages like this one usually mix hard numbers with marketing language. Here is the line between them.

Verified on 29 July 2026. Every Shopify plan price, transaction-fee percentage, staff-account limit, inventory-location count, checkout-customisation level and POS Pro price in the table above was read directly from Shopify's India pricing page on that date and is quoted before 18% GST. The 70.22% cart abandonment figure is Baymard Institute's average across 50 published studies. The Shopify Theme Store price band and Razorpay's 2% standard domestic rate come from the sources listed below. Shopify changes pricing periodically and gateway rates are negotiable at volume, so confirm current numbers before you budget.

Not independently verified. Our delivery record — 100+ Shopify projects, clients in 10+ countries — is our own record and cannot be checked from outside. Timelines shown on the service cards are typical ranges from past projects, not commitments; your actual timeline goes in your scope document. The 24-hour first-response target is a service commitment on business days, not a contractual SLA unless your agreement says so.

What we will not claim. We do not promise a specific conversion-rate lift, revenue increase, or search ranking from a design, redesign or migration project. Anyone who does is guessing about traffic they have not seen. We also do not guarantee store uptime, because Shopify hosts your storefront and controls that, not us. Where we think Shopify is the wrong platform for what you have described — very complex B2B pricing, heavy ERP-driven catalogues, or a business that genuinely needs full checkout control on a small budget — we will tell you during the scoping call rather than after the invoice.

On pricing our own work. We do not publish service prices, because a five-product launch and a two-thousand-SKU migration are not the same job. You get a fixed written quote after the free scoping call, and the scope document states what is excluded so change requests are a conversation rather than a surprise.

Questions

Shopify FAQ

The questions that come up most often on scoping calls.

How much does a Shopify store cost per month in India?

On annual billing, Shopify's India pricing as of 29 July 2026 is ₹1,499 per month for Basic, ₹5,599 for Grow and ₹22,680 for Advanced, with Plus starting from ₹1,75,000 — all before 18% GST, and monthly billing costs more than annual. That subscription is only part of the cost. Because Shopify Payments has not launched in India, you will use a domestic gateway such as Razorpay, PayU or Cashfree, which charges its own rate — Razorpay publishes 2% plus GST as standard for domestic cards, UPI, net banking and wallets — and Shopify adds a third-party transaction fee of 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced or 0.2% on Plus. Budget for the subscription, the gateway rate, Shopify's transaction fee, any paid apps, and a one-time theme purchase if you buy one.

Is Shopify Payments available in India yet?

No. As of 29 July 2026 Shopify Payments has not launched in India, and Shopify's India pricing page still lists a third-party payment provider fee for every plan, which is what you pay when Shopify Payments is unavailable or unused. Practically this means every Indian Shopify merchant integrates a domestic gateway and pays two fees per order: the gateway's rate and Shopify's transaction fee. Since Shopify occasionally expands Shopify Payments to new countries, it is worth re-checking at signup — but plan your budget on the two-fee assumption.

Do I need a paid Shopify theme, or will a free one do?

A free Shopify theme is a legitimate starting point. Shopify maintains its free themes directly, they are built on Online Store 2.0, and they receive regular updates — which is more than can be said for some paid themes from small studios. Paid Theme Store themes are a one-time purchase, generally in the US$140–500 range, and mostly buy you pre-built sections and layout variety rather than better performance. Our advice is to decide the design direction first and then pick the theme closest to it, free or paid. Buying a premium theme and then paying a developer to undo its defaults is the most common way brands waste money at this stage.

Why is my Shopify store slow when Shopify hosts it?

Almost always because of what has been added to the storefront rather than the storefront itself. Shopify's hosting and CDN are fast; the slowdown comes from app JavaScript — reviews, upsells, popups, wishlists, chat, currency switchers, multiple analytics tags — loading on every page whether or not the feature is used there. Oversized hero images and leftover code from apps that were uninstalled months ago add to it. A speed audit should start with an app inventory and a check for orphaned script tags and theme snippets, then move to image formats and sizes, and only then to theme code. We measure against Google's Core Web Vitals rather than a single composite score, because that is what Google actually uses.

Will migrating to Shopify hurt my Google rankings?

It can, and whether it does comes down to redirect planning. Shopify enforces its own URL patterns — /products/, /collections/, /pages/ — so if you are coming from WooCommerce or Magento, essentially every URL changes. Products, customers and order history migrate reliably; search equity only survives if a complete old-to-new 301 redirect map is written and crawl-tested before the DNS switch, with titles, meta descriptions and image alt text carried across. Expect some short-term fluctuation even on a clean migration while Google recrawls. The migrations that lose rankings permanently are the ones where redirects were treated as post-launch cleanup.

Can you customise the Shopify checkout?

Only within limits, and the limits depend on your plan. Shopify's checkout is deliberately standardised — it is one of the platform's real advantages, since it is tested at a scale no individual store could match — and Shopify's own plan comparison lists checkout customisation as "limited" on Basic, Grow and Advanced, with full customisation on Plus. In practice most checkout-stage losses can be addressed before checkout anyway: showing shipping costs on the product page, giving delivery estimates earlier, and offering the payment methods your customers actually use, which in India means UPI and often cash on delivery. If your business genuinely requires bespoke checkout logic, that is a Plus conversation and we will say so early.

What does your Shopify support cover that Shopify's own support doesn't?

Shopify's support handles platform questions well — billing, account settings, how a native feature works, whether something is possible. What it does not do is work inside your theme or your app stack. It will not debug a Liquid template a previous developer edited, identify which of your apps is adding two seconds to the product page, resolve a conflict between two apps fighting over the cart, apply theme updates without breaking your customised sections, or advise whether a requirement should be an app, a theme section or a private app. That is the gap our maintenance retainer covers, alongside staged updates, backups and Core Web Vitals monitoring.

How long does a Shopify project take, and what do you need from us?

Typical ranges from past projects: two to three weeks for a straightforward store setup, three to six weeks for custom design, three to five weeks for a migration, and four to seven for a redesign. Custom development varies widely with scope. The single biggest factor in whether those ranges hold is how quickly we get your material — product data in a usable spreadsheet, images, brand assets, copy, gateway and courier account access, and timely feedback at each approval point. Projects that slip almost always slip waiting on content or sign-off, which is why the scope document names who owns each input.

Do you work with brands outside India?

Yes. We have delivered Shopify work for clients in India, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the UAE and Australia. For stores based outside India, Shopify Payments is generally available and the two-fee structure described on this page does not apply — you would pay Shopify Payments' processing rate instead, which varies by country and card type. Time-zone overlap is arranged at the start of the engagement, and the response commitment stays the same.
